LUK Gets Help from Local Lions, Sterilite

Youth in LUK’s residential services will feel a little more at home, thanks to Massachusetts District 33A Lions. For this year’s Services for Children project, Lions assembled Comfort Cartons – totes filled with a journal, colored pencils, earbuds, sensory items, a throw pillow and blanket, pillow cases, a towel set, and a stuffed lion. Lions Services for Children Chairperson Mary Delaney visited clubs throughout the District, which covers central Massachusetts, to explain what youth in residential care experience and how some items that are all their own can make all the difference.

Like foster youth, those in residential care are often removed from their homes on short notice and lack luggage and personal items. Many arrive with a few items packed in a garbage bag. The Comfort Cartons are both useful and symbolic – the youth receive them as a welcome into the program and are allowed to take them when they leave. It gives the youth a permanent storage container while in the program, and acts as luggage when transitioning out.Youth in LUK’s residential services will feel a little more at home, thanks to Massachusetts District 33A Lions. Sterilite, a 75 year old corporation headquartered in Townsend, is a world leader in the production of plastic housewares. Sterilite has a long history of charitable giving, and thanks to a generous donation of 150 totes, the Lions are able to provide Comfort Cartons for the residential programs for a year.
