LUK Inc. Promoting Red Ribbon Week
Letters to the editor
The Gardner News
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month. We write to encourage schools, parents, community and faith groups to unite and take the Red Ribbon pledge to live a drug-free life.
For over 45 years, LUK Inc. has offered community-based social services and has been a leader of adolescent substance abuse prevention in Worcester County. LUK has supported our communities in building capacity to implement a wide variety of effective, evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs and strategies.
Today, LUK continues that tradition by coordinating two community collaboratives in Gardner and Fitchburg/Leominster to reduce underage alcohol abuse and in promoting positive youth development services to youth and young adults. Because of our collective efforts with public and private partners, we have documented a 12 percent decrease in current alcohol use rates among adolescents, as well as an 8 percent decrease in adolescent binge drinking over the last eight years.
Given our history and mission of addressing the community need of decreasing alcohol and drug use, LUK staff is promoting Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31.
